The first named poinsettia cultivar, 'Oakleaf', dates only to 1923, nearly a century after the plant reached the United States, and everything on a store bench today descends from breeding done since. The Paul Ecke Ranch in Encinitas, California still supplies the mother stock behind most of the world's poinsettias, by Clemson's figure over two thirds of them. December 12 is National Poinsettia Day, marking the death of the diplomat who brought the plant north, while the official December birth flowers remain narcissus and holly. And a plant that spent a week sleeved beside a drafty store entrance is aging fast no matter the price, so the tight-cyathia check from the buying section is worth its ten seconds in any store, at any point in the season.
