Taxonomy and origin
The garden pansy (Viola x wittrockiana) is a hybrid in the family Violaceae, bred from European wild violas and above all from the tricolor Johnny-jump-up (Viola tricolor). Breeders in England and on the Continent began that work in the early nineteenth century, selecting for wider flowers, better cold tolerance, and the dark central blotch that reads as a face on most modern cultivars. The common name comes from the Middle French pensรฉe, meaning thought or remembrance, after the way the bloom nods forward on its stalk like a person deep in contemplation.
